Hi! My name is Gillian Gallo and this will be my third year as a Bobcat.
I received my Master of Arts in counseling with a focus on school counseling from Messiah University in my home state of Pennsylvania and am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas. I’ve had the pleasure of gaining experience in various settings including clinical outpatient, private practice, and even interning at Bee Cave Elementary during my graduate studies. I was thrilled for the opportunity to become an official bobcat myself! My husband, two dogs (Poppy and Hoagie) and myself have enjoyed living in the sunshine of Texas for the last 5 years. In my free time you may find me enjoying live music, exploring local coffee shops, browsing the Austin Public Library, or spending quality time with friends and family.
As the school counselor, you can expect me to be an advocate and support system for your child’s academic, social, and emotional success here at Bee Cave Elementary. Looking forward to another fabulous school year with you!
What Does a School Counselor Do?
Classroom Guidance
Guidance classes occur once a month with every K-5 class in the school and are about 30 minutes in length. The lessons focus on the six pillars of character- Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
Counseling
The counselor works with students individually and in small groups. Small group counseling sessions are held in the fall semester and may assist students in learning how to cope with issues such as conflict resolution, social skills, anger management or loss. Students, staff members or parents may initiate a referral to see the counselor.
Coordination
The counselor coordinates various programs such as STAAR Testing, A4L (Assessment for Learning) Intervention Program and Character Counts. We also work with the PALS (Peer Assistance and Leadership) Program to pair high school mentors with elementary school students. The counselor also plans various character education programs and school-wide assemblies throughout the year. Sandy Brown coordinates the Mentor/Book Buddies Program.
Consultation
The counselor communicates regularly with parents/guardians to address any concerns they may have regarding their child’s education. The counselor also consults with administrators, teachers, and staff members to ensure a positive educational experience for all students.
